How Thick Should a Concrete Driveway Be?
A standard residential driveway should be poured at least 4 inches thick. If the driveway will regularly carry heavier vehicles — trucks, RVs, boat trailers — we typically recommend going to 5 or 6 inches with added reinforcement. Thickness alone isn't the whole story, though; a driveway poured too thin on a poorly compacted base will still fail early, and a properly prepped 4-inch driveway can easily outlast a thicker one poured on bad ground.
Do I Need a Permit for a New Driveway or Patio in Maryland?
It depends on your county, your property, and the scope of the project. Some straightforward replacements on an existing footprint don't require a permit, while new driveways, additions that change drainage, or work near setbacks often do in Prince George's, Charles, Calvert, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel County. Why Does Concrete Need Rebar or Wire Mesh?
Concrete handles compression (weight pressing down) very well but is weak under tension (pulling or bending forces). Rebar or wire mesh reinforcement doesn't stop concrete from ever cracking — nothing fully does — but it holds the slab together if a hairline crack does form, so it stays tight and level instead of separating, shifting, or growing wider over time.
How Do I Care for New Concrete in Winter?
Avoid rock salt and most de-icing chemicals on new concrete for at least its first winter — they can pit and damage the surface before it's fully cured. Sand provides traction without the chemical exposure. Also avoid metal shovels or plow blades that could scrape or chip the surface, and address any leftover form boards or edging carefully once temperatures drop.
Why Is My Concrete Driveway Cracking?
The most common causes are an improperly compacted base, missing or incorrectly spaced control joints, nearby tree roots pushing up from below, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, or simple age. Hairline cracks are usually cosmetic and normal over a long enough timeline. Cracks that are wide, uneven, or actively shifting are worth having assessed — they can point to a base or drainage issue rather than just surface wear.
How Often Should I Seal My Concrete?
Plain broom-finish or exposed aggregate concrete benefits from resealing roughly every 3 to 5 years. Stamped and decorative concrete needs more frequent attention — every 2 to 3 years — to keep the color vibrant and maintain weather protection, since the stamped texture has more surface area exposed to sun and moisture.
